Somerset Trojans coach Dennis Brown believes the Player Development League’s Christmas Tournament will help keep his young players sharp and give them more time to focus on their main goal of promotion this year.Brown admitted his priority had been on bringing the younger players into the fold when the Trojans were relegated last season, something that may have not have gone down too well with the Somerset Cricket Club hierarchy.Trojans got off to a good start to their Premier Division campaign last year, grabbing eight points from their first four games and climbed as high as second place before losing to Dandy Town, a result that triggered their startling slide.Less that a year on, however, the team are three points clear at the top of the First Division and have lost just once, against Hamilton Parish.Brown is delighted to see his youngsters proving their worth, but is not too surprised with what is going on at the club.“We have definitely made a very good start to the season, but I’m not surprised at where we are,” said Brown.“We have tremendous home grown talent coming through the Trojan programme at the moment.”Helping Brown along the road to recovery at the club is the Bermuda Football Association’s PDL League, which includes Trojans as well as Young Men’s Social Club from the First Division, a format that allows his young troops more playing time as well as gaining experience for the big league.The likes of 15-year-old Chikosi Basden, Trevin Ming, Justin Corday, Jahmeko Outerbridge and Tahj Wade, along with Justin Donawa and overseas player Tristan Smith are all making their name at the West End club, dubbed ‘Silver City’ for their collection of trophies.While the trophies have been hard to come by in recent years, at least the bigger cups the club strives for, the boss believes the side are moving in the right direction.Trojans top their PDL Christmas Tournament group with wins over PHC and Somerset Eagles and have booked thei place into the knockout round of the tournament.“We are in the driver’s seat in the table at the moment but we are also a target and it’s what we do from here that will determine our success in the second half.“We can just be satisfied with what we have accomplished and party over the holiday, or while everybody is out partying we will be working and preparing for the second half of the season.“It’s always good to be in the cups and win but in the First Division the main focus should always be promotion and although I hate losing with a passion, being knocked out will enable us to concentrate on just the league.”
