Year in jail for female drunk driver who seriously injured teenager
A drunk driver has been jailed for a year after knocking a teenager off his bike and leaving him with life-threatening injuries.Angela Ambrosini’s car veered across the road, hit a wall and ended up on top of 16-year-old Shakir Amory. She was more than two-and-a-half times the legal alcohol limit at the time, after spending the afternoon and evening at a hotel.Mr Amory suffered a severe head injury that’s left him with what a prosecutor described as “intellectual deficit” and memory loss.He also sustained fractures to his jaw, collarbone, hip, ribs, two broken legs, a broken wrist, lung damage and lacerations.Ambrosini, 37, wept as the punishment was meted out after her lawyer unsuccessfully argued she should receive a non-custodial sentence. The marketing manager and voluntary worker apologised, and said: “I truly hope this message of my story can resonate in the community.”Jailing her, Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves told her: “Despite all the good deeds you may perform, it only takes a moment to destroy it all.”He described drunk driving as an unnecessary risk that too many people take despite “relentless” campaigns illustrating the dangers.“There is really no need to take such a risk. It is likely to bring us to calamity, it is likely to bring innocent others to calamity,” he said.Ambrosini pleaded guilty on the morning her trial was due to begin in November to causing grievous bodily harm by driving while over the legal blood-alcohol limit.During sentencing yesterday, prosecutor Nicole Smith said Ambrosini spent the afternoon and evening of March 6, 2010 at the Hamilton Princess hotel. She was driving east towards her home in Smith’s around 11.20pm when the collision occurred on South Road, Devonshire, near Brighton Hill Road. Her car veered into the westbound lane and hit a stone wall, according to accident investigators. The vehicle flipped over and landed on top of Mr Amory, who was riding his auxiliary cycle home to Somerset, in the westbound lane. The car skidded to a halt back in the eastbound lane, landing on its roof.Ambrosini was pulled from her wrecked vehicle by a passer-by, and taken to hospital with minor injuries to her hand and leg.Mr Amory was found nearby, “unconscious and barely displaying vital signs”, according to Ms Smith.Ambrosini failed a blood-alcohol test, which showed 204 mg of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood when the legal limit is 80 mg.Mr Amory spent three months in King Edward VII Memorial Hospital recuperating from his injuries, and a further month at a rehabilitation hospital in Boston. He continues to suffer from his injuries, and Ms Smith told the court the talented sportsman is no longer able to play sports and his long-term prognosis is “uncertain”.The mandatory minimum sentence for the crime is a year in prison and a three-year driving ban. The maximum is a decade behind bars.Defence lawyer Larry Mussenden argued that any prison sentence should be suspended due to mitigating circumstances. He called evidence from several character witnesses who described Ambrosini marketing director at TeleBermuda International - as a good person who coaches young footballers at the PHC club. She has no previous convictions and is unmarried, with no children.“There’s no kind of substance abuse that exists with Ms Ambrosini,” added Mr. Mussenden. “She’s never been a heavy drinker.”However, he said she’s of Italian descent and enjoys wine. After her plea hearing in November, Ambrosini hugged Mr Amory and his mother and apologised. Yesterday, during a tearful speech, she said: “I apologise again to Shakir and his family for the injuries, pain and suffering I’ve caused him.”Mr Mussenden said he will appeal the sentence. The next Court of Appeal session is in March.
