Georgia O’Keeffe inspired show to open at 64 Degrees restaurant in Southampton
Artist Manuel Palacio’s latest exhibition, ‘Beautiful Bermuda Inspired by O’Keeffe’, opens this Sunday. The exhibit will be held at Southampton restaurant 64 Degrees. According to Mr Palacio, part of the idea was to show how artists can work with interior designers.“The space is big and he has a lot of room for art there,” said Mr Palacio. “The idea is not only for this show, but to keep it going and to always have art to view in different places other than a gallery, so that people can come out and view it and see what art looks like always.”Mr Palacio thought this might encourage Bermudians to buy local art and for local artists to be considered when interior designers are pulling projects together.“We have the capability of doing big, beautiful art, so let’s use the talent that we have here.“It’s kind of like with the sculpture thing [of the late Dame Lois Brown Evans that is now being created by American artist Zenos Frudakis].“Let’s just bypass everybody else and go out and get someone else and come up with some excuse why we are not using a Bermudian sculptor. The money would’ve been spent here.”He added: “All these new buildings going up in town, they will all need artwork, but 99.9 percent out of 100, they are going to buy some print or get the work cheaply whereas they could’ve commissioned us to do 20 pieces and have a bargain on local art.“The talent is here and it is not being used and I’m not going to blame them, it’s just that they might not be aware where to start.”‘Beautiful Bermuda Inspired by O’Keeffe’ is a look at Bermuda’s “culture, our people, and artwork that represents our society” Mr Palacio added.“It is also a refection on our society that we have creative people doing the artwork, rather than going abroad and getting something that does not reflect Bermuda.“So this is work that is done for our local market and what I am working on is to have my art be like Georgia O’Keeffe, whereas it is a staple of what Bermuda art should look like.“I want to move along from the little cottages and to have it that wherever it is seen in the world, it is seen as a Bermudian painting and to make it as part of what we are.”He continued: “Georgia O’Keeffe came here and painted lots of flowers.“She was someone who was here and saw the beauty of Bermuda and made it world famous.“So I am getting inspiration from her and using her example and making Bermuda themes world famous.”The show will remain up until further notice. The opening reception is from 5pm to 6.30pm.
