Former Premier’s son wins Warwick South East primary
Lawrence Scott, son of former Premier Alex, was last night selected as the Progressive Labour Party candidate in his father’s constituency.Mr Scott, 31, beat former PLP Senator Neville Tyrrell in the constituency 24 contest at Warwick Workman’s Club.A party spokesman would not release the result of the vote but it is understood the political newcomer won by 15 votes to ten after giving a very well received speech. He is now expected to represent the PLP in Warwick South East at the next general election, taking the reins from his father, 71, who will retire from politics.Mr Scott, supervisor of airport operations for JetBlue, told The Royal Gazette after his victory: “I’m ecstatic that the people of 24 have put their faith in me as a PLP representative. The work starts now.”He said he had grown up in the area and still attended church at Cobbs Hill.“It’s great to be able to represent the area in which I grew up and now be able to give back to the people I grew up swith.”His father, who was at the primary with wife Olga and daughter Robyn Eve, said: “Obviously, we are very pleased and very proud. We were behind him and supportive of him but he did it all himself.“He worked with the executive and the constituency and he’s been rewarded. But now the work starts.”Mr Alex Scott said he was happy to pass the mantle to his son, after a political career dating back to 1985, when he was appointed to the Senate.“It’s going to be great for the community because they get an energetic young man who is committed to the principles not only of the party but of the constituents and the country.“I think the PLP is going to end up with a blend of youthful energy and innovation but it’s important that the party maintains experienced parliamentarians and executive members.”He added: “Mr Tyrrell is a very, very good candidate. He has served the party and the country well. I’m sorry that it couldn’t be two candidates, like the old style.“I would not like to lose the benefit of Mr Tyrrell’s experience. My suggestion to Lawrence will be to get in touch with him and get the insight that Mr Tyrrell has.”He joked of his son’s first foray into politics: “I hope he knows what he’s doing: some may have thought he lost tonight!”Asked if he would consider a return to the Senate once he steps down as a backbench MP, Mr Alex Scott gave an emphatic “No”.“I know where the light switch is,” he said. “I’m about to put my hand on the door and go through it. I’ve made my contribution.”He said he’d continue to contribute by supporting younger party members, such as his son.Mr Alex Scott became an MP, for Warwick East in 1993 and served as Premier between 2003 and 2006.At the last general election, in 2007, he won a fourth term in the House of Assembly after beating the United Bermuda Party’s Jeff Sousa by 518 to 367 votes in constituency 24.Last night’s result was the latest in a series of candidate selection meetings taking place this month. The next two primaries are on Wednesday (October 12) in constituencies 18 where Government Estates Minister and incumbent Neletha Butterfield and Premier’s Chief of Staff David Burt will face off for a seocnd time and 27 (Warwick North Central), currently represented by Elvin James.Useful website: www.plp.bm.
