Hogges capable of competing with best

Bermuda Hogges boss Maurice Lowe believes the side’s latest result shows that they have the quality to compete in the USL Premier Development League (PDL) despite a disappointing season. The Bermuda club have underachieved in many people’s eyes this year after harbouring play-off hopes at the beginning of the campaign. On the pitch, however, they flattered to deceive after starting the season with an unbeaten streak before losing nine games on the trot that put paid to any post-season hopes.Yet, their latest performance, a 3-1 win over fifth place Long Island Rough Riders at BAA on Thursday night, suggested the side were capable of competing against the best teams in the league. And they get another chance to shine tomorrow night when they play the Baltimore Bohemians at BAA (kick-off 5pm).For the coach, it was more about consistency and commitment than the lack of ability that has seen the side falter.“We have lacked consistency this season and when you look at how we have played, we were always in the match and getting the better of teams for parts of games and today we put it all together and it showed on the pitch,” said Lowe after Thursday’s win.“The team played excellent in our last match, we talked about playing for pride and we certainly did that today.“We were extra motivated heading into this match and you could see their hunger in training and it was good to see that they could come out like this and get the result.“This is why we are in this league because you can’t get better just by saying you are good and playing mediocre football. We beat one of the better sides in the league and we will look to continue this with our next game on Sunday.”The Hogges outplayed their East Coast rivals in a performance full of commitment and attacking fervour. It was, without doubt, their most complete display, making a mockery of their position in the table. The side are now second from the bottom in the Mid Atlantic Division with eight points from 14 games with two remaining home games including tomorrow’s match against the Bohemians, a side two places above them. This will be the first meeting between the two teams this season and a Hogges win would go a long way to building confidence for the players heading into a busy off season.Upcoming competitions include the Caribbean Cup, and many of the senior players could rejoin the Hogges for match fitness as they prepare for what lies ahead, something that could point to more positive results as the season comes to a close.“At the beginning of the season we talked about preparing for the Under-20s as well as the Caribbean Cup and lately we have brought in a few of the younger guys to get them ready as well as the older guys to sharpen themselves up as well,” added Lowe.Kick off for tomorrow’s game is set for 5pm.
