Bermuda Futsal Federation (BFF) president Peter Sousa has high expectations for the upcoming 2012-13 Women’s Futsal League. As many one hundred players of various ages were among the teams represented during last year’s inaugural league campaign which saw North Village Lady Rams crowned champions.Former top referee Sousa now hopes to see the fledgling league go from “strength-to-strength” when the new season kicks off next month at a venue yet to be determined.“Last year we had eight teams and about 100 players ranging in ages from 10-40 from the different clubs and we culminated that in March, 2012 with our first Women’s Futsal All-Star Game,” Sousa said. “We had a couple of hundred people show up and it was phenomenal and we are hoping to have another year of success.“We are hoping to have at least the same amount of players and we also have some thoughts on how to expand the league and maybe encourage younger ladies to participate. We are also looking at adding some other things to build a solid foundation for Women’s Futsal and hopefully continue to go from strength to strength.”Sousa said his association was looking to secure either Bermuda College Gym and Dellwood Middle School Gym to host matches.“Thankfully we play in a gym so there’s no weather issues and it provides a very safe environment,” he added. “Our policy is to try and encourage families to come out.”The league is due to kick off December 8 with games to be held on Saturdays between 5 and 9pm.Those interested in playing can obtain registration forms from Bermuda Football Association (BFA) or BFF at bdafutsal@yahoo.com before the November 30 registration deadline. Completed registration forms with payment (cheques payable to the BFA) must be submitted to the BFA’s office. As well as Women’s Futsal, Sousa said his association were exploring the possibility of introducing a Men’s Futsal League in the not-too-distant future.“Getting the adult men and boys involved is also part of our plans and it’s just a matter of the right timing,” he added. “We’ve had youth leagues and in September we had our first National Youth Futsal Tournament involving Under-10, Under-12 and Under-14 players. We actually had over 200 players participate and it was a phenomenal tournament.”
