A group of Bermuda hospitality students received a leg-up from Royal Caribbean International this week.Tourism Minister Shawn Crockwell presented seven students with RCI Hospitality Awards during a ceremony on board the Celebrity Cruise Line’s MV Summit.He was joined at the event by MV Summit Captain Theodoros Zakkas and Michael Ronan, Vice President, Government Relations — Caribbean, Latin America and Asia for Royal Caribbean, along with the scholarship interview committee.Mr Crockwell said: “The Government of Bermuda believes that the future of Tourism lies with our youth and the Department of Tourism takes its role very seriously in doing its part to develop our future leaders of the Tourism industry.“Over the past several years we have showcased this commitment by pioneering several initiatives aimed at supporting members of our community who wish to embark on careers associated with the hospitality industry.“To date, this programme has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship funds to 70 young Bermudians to assist them in tourism related studies.”Nikhil Hassell received a $12,500 scholarship to continue culinary arts studies at Johnson and Wales University, while Ricai Walker-Williams was awarded a $7,000 scholarship to study food and culinary arts at University College Birmingham.Sajni Richardson and Ramsay Saggar were each awarded $5,000 scholarships to continue their studies into pastry arts and hospitality management respectively, while Tiffany Sanchez, received a $3,000 scholarship to study travel tourism and hospitality management.And Sierra Symonds and Priya Rattery were each awarded $2,500 to continue their studies in culinary arts at Bermuda College.
