Governor Fergusson tours Railway Trail footbridge
Governor George Fergusson yesterday toured the progress made on a pedestrian footbridge over Bailey’s Bay.
The project linking sections of the Railway Trail is mostly being funded by the non-profit group, Friends of the Bermuda Railway Trial, in partnership with the Parks Department.
Accompanying Mr Ferguson was Mike Murphy, a founder of the group, and sponsors who contributed to the cost of the work.
They included Sylvan Richards of Allied World Assurance; Mark Wilcox of Renaissance Re; Chris Jackson of the Montpelier Group and Jay Nichols, an individual sponsor.
The group walked from Francis Patton School to Bailey’s Bay to observe the work under way and progress made.
Mr Murphy said: “The bridge won’t be open to the public until November but work is going well. We’ll have a grand opening when it’s ready.
“We’ve opened up a couple of sites along the Trail that had been closed for 30 years — there was too much growth, you couldn’t get through.
“Some sites along the Trail that we’ve opened up include old railway buildings and something we found that’s quite extraordinary is an old commode carved out of Bermuda stone.
“There are a lot of very old, historic things down there.”
Friends of Bermuda Railway Trail hope that by connecting the Railway Trail, it will become a popular attraction for locals and tourists.
