Belco update: 6,157 without power

Just over 6,150 Belco customers remained without power last night as crews continued to work to restore electricity across the island.

Meanwhile extra crews from The Caribbean Electric Utility Service Corporation are expected to arrive in Bermuda this week to help with the huge post-Gonzalo clean-up operation.

Yesterday, a Belco spokeswoman said: “CARILEC has indicated that crews will be making their way to Bermuda on commercial flights, rather than on a charter, so will be arriving at various times.

“We do expect crews from one utility to arrive on Tuesday with others arriving later in the week.

“Also, there may be some change to the islands that are sending crews.”

At 9pm yesterday 6,157 customers were without power. The breakdown of customers without power by area was Central: 2,561, City: 99, East: 1,977 West: 1,520.

Crews have continued to work around the clock to restore main circuits since Gonzalo hit the island on Friday night and left 31,200 homes without power.

They have also tackled downed poles, live wires and downed transformers and as of late yesterday were also working on restoring essential buildings, including schools, and clearing Belco equipment from roads so that buses can resume full service, while other agencies are also clearing road debris.
