Fire crews tackle three separate blazes

Firefighters were called out to three blazes across the Island today.

An abandoned van was reported on fire in Warwick at 2.39pm.

Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Sergeant Jamal Albuoy said: “BFRS responded to the incident with appliances from our Port Royal Station and four personnel.

“On arrival, an abandoned van, debris and an area of brush measuring approximately 20ft by 20ft was involved with fire.

“Firefighters dressed in breathing apparatus manned with a fire hoseline extinguished the blaze.”

A brush fire was reported at 7.53pm in the area of Port Royal Golf Course area.

Sgt Albuoy said: “BFRS responded to the incident with appliances from our Hamilton Station and our Port Royal Station.

“Three appliances and eight personnel responded to the incident. On our arrival, an area of horticultural waste measuring approximately 50ft by 100ft was involved with fire.

“Firefighters dressed in breathing apparatus manned with a fire hoseline extinguished the blaze.”

The surrounding area was also wet down.

Sgt Albuoy praised Darren DeSilva, of Water Now Trucking Service, who was in area and offered a supply of water to assist with extinguishing the fire.

“It is kind acts like this that truly make us our brother’s keeper,” he said. “Mr DeSilva, your kind gesture is applauded.”

Fire crews were again called into action at 8.18pm.

“Personnel at our Clearwater Station responded to a report of a pedal bike on fire in the St David’s area,” Sgt Albuoy said. “On our arrival, the wheels to a child’s BMX pedal bike was discovered to be on fire. “Firefighters quickly extinguished the small fire with minimal water. No one was injured.”
