A Christmas event by chef Michiko Campbell managed to feed more than 600 people and raise $3,000 for a sick Bermudian.

Mr Campbell, the owner of Chiko’s Smokey Rub, said 651 people received a free Christmas meal through the event at Albuoy’s Point, while more than $2,000 was raised through a donation box on the site.

Mr Campbell and his wife Sherelle decided to add their own donation, taking the funds raised up to $3,000.

The funds were this week presented to 29-year-old Kevina Santucci, who is in Boston fighting spindle cell rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

Mrs Campbell said: “I showed Chiko a news article about her and some of her social media posts a while back — he was instantly touched.”

Mr Campbell added: “We contacted her the day after the event to let her know we will be presenting her with a donation from our charity event. She was so happy. Always give back. I am truly grateful for all that God has blessed me with: a beautiful wife, good health, good job and business, supportive family and friends, the gift to give and another day of life. We are blessed to be able to help Kevina.”

Ms Santucci expressed her gratitude on social media, writing that she received the message from Sherelle moments after praying that God continued to provide for her and her family.

“This beautiful couple are my answer to prayer,” she wrote. “God’s plan for our lives is far better than our minds can fathom. When we feel as though we have no control over our lives, God steps in to show that he already has things worked out for us.”
