Minister hails fire crews

Senator Jeff Baron met fire officers today to thank them for their efforts during yesterday’s bus fire.

The Minister of National Security also hailed the work of the bus driver for helping to ensure that all passengers were able to get off the bus safely.

“The men and women of the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service continue to make us proud,” Mr Baron said. “Yesterday’s bus fire by all accounts was a harrowing and unnerving experience, especially for the young schoolchildren who were on board. Thankfully no injuries or loss of life were sustained in this fire.

“And in that regard we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the bus operator for his bravery, courage and swift action in getting the children to safety.”

The bus had to be evacuated at about 7.30am near Khyber Pass in Warwick as it took children to school after the blaze broke out on board.

Mr Baron added: “We often take for granted the dangerous and perilous situations that our emergency services personnel must engage in on a daily basis. It’s reassuring to know that their rigorous training has prepared them to protect the public during incidents such as these.

“In that regard, Bermuda can be immensely proud of the emergency services that provide safety and security for the island.”
