A Bermudian’s photograph of a girl leading the Black Lives Matter march on Front Street has attracted the praise of a famous videographer.

The photo by Milvin DeRosa, 20, was highlighted by Canadian-based photographer Peter McKinnon who has 4.79 million followers on YouTube.

The photograph focuses on an unidentified girl with her fist extended out and a large crowd of protesters following behind her.

Mr McKinnon said in a YouTube video that Mr DeRosa’s photo was his favourite out of a selection of Black Lives Matter protest photographs taken from around the world which he was presenting an editing tutorial for.

Mr DeRosa, who studies environmental science at Bermuda College, told The Royal Gazette: “It gave me a confidence boost and made me feel proud of my work.

“When I saw the girl during the march, I knew I needed to get in front of her and get her attention. I wanted the photo to show her staring down as if to say, ‘I care and here I am fighting for my future.’”

Mr Kinnon said on his YouTube video: “It is such a strong photo and it just shows what a strong little person she is standing up front with all that courage. You kind of see that photo and you just lock eyes with her right away and it is quite a sight to see.

“Milvin, you are doing a great job keep it up.”
