The gay couple who yesterday married in Bermuda said their special day could not have gone better.

Bermudian Bruce Whayman and Roland Maertens were able to marry at the Registry General’s office, thanks to the May decision by Judge Charles-Etta Simmons that legalised gay marriage.

The couple were joined at the ceremony by Mr Whayman’s parents and one of his friends.

Mr Whayman told The Royal Gazette: “I am obviously very happy and elated that we were able to do something like this in Bermuda.

“I never expected that we would be able to. It means an enormous amount to me.

He added: “It went very smoothly, we were even ahead of schedule — it was very efficient.”

Mr Maertens added: “Today was lovely; we had a wonderful ceremony with friends and family.

“After the ceremony, we went and had a photoshoot at Waterville, the Bermuda National Trust headquarters, and then we went to Ascots for a nice lunch.”

A proposed Bill by Progressive Labour Party MP Wayne Furbert, however, could lead to a reversal of the court decision.

Mr Whayman said: “The Government should work on building rather than dividing relations.”

The couple plan to spend their honeymoon between Bermuda and Budapest, Hungary, before returning to their home in Australia.
