Double duty for Fray
Terryn Fray made his season debut for North Village at Bernard Park on Sunday — just over an hour after helping Bailey’s Bay lift the Champion of Champions trophy.
The Village defender came on as a 61st-minute substitute during his team’s 2-1 home win over Boulevard in their Premier Division season opener.
That Fray was able to play owed to Bay’s crushing eight-wicket defeat of Western Stars in the Champion of Champions final at nearby St John’s Field, where he held a catch and shared in a 40-run opening stand with Malachi Jones.
“I wasn’t really expecting to play today,” Fray said. “But Mr Boyles [Village head coach Devarr Boyles] had asked me to be prepared just in case and so I prepared myself and luckily we made lightwork of Western Stars.
“The match wasn’t up to expectations. But it’s another trophy for us, so we are not complaining.”
Fray came on to help stabilise a Village defence that was stretched to near breaking point against a rampant Boulevard attack that piled on the pressure.
“I wasn’t expecting to play but at half time I got a nudge to say ‘just be ready’ so I prepared myself,” Fray said.
Asked if he felt any fatigue, Fray added: “Physically I feel fine, I have been keeping myself fit with cricket with the national team and things like that so fitness isn’t an issue.
“It is just the heat for now with football, but other than that I am fine. I am just trying to take care of my body as much as possible.”
Fray has made a seamless transition from full back to central defender at Village.
“I have been playing there since last season so I am pretty used to it now,” he said.
“I am just excited to get a win on our first league game of the season, which is always a good start.”
