Cougars made to work for victory against Social Club

Calin Maybury, left, scored twice for Cougars

Devonshire Cougars 3 Social Club 1

Devonshire Cougars came from a goal down against Young Men’s Social Club to get a win in front of their home crowd at Devonshire Recreation Club yesterday.

Bottom club Social Club shocked the home side by taking an early lead through their striker Clay Darrell. The goal came in the third minute, after Nique Armstrong robbed the Cougars defence of the ball and chose to square it to his strike partner, with Darrell then obliging and putting the ball home.

In the 22nd minute, the home side were awarded a free kick. Calin Maybury stepped up and struck a magnificent effort that left Reid Trott, the Social Club goalkeeper, with no chance.

In the 51st minute, Cougars scored their second goal. After a good sequence of passes involving Jomeko Mallory, Moses Steede, and Lovintz Tota, the latter found himself in space on the edge of the box, and released a blistering shot that nestled into the top corner. Shortly after Cougars took the lead, things went from bad to worse for Social Club, with Armstrong receiving a second yellow card.

A long ball over the top then beat the Cougars backline and Darrell raced on to it and headed for goal. With only the goal goalkeeper to beat and with plenty of time to pick his spot, Darrell inexplicably rushed his shot and it sailed high into the bank above the field.

Cashun Brangman then had a chance to put Cougars up 3-1, but he fired high and wide. Mallory provided Cougars a third goal cushion, although his goal was somewhat fortuitous. In the 82nd minute, Mallory raced down the left and whipped in a powerful cross that flew straight into the net.
