D’Andre Wainwright, the Durham City striker, continued his prolific start to the season after getting on the scoresheet in his team’s last two outings in the Northern League Division Two.

The 20-year-old netted a brace in Durham’s 2-2 home draw against Tow Law Town at the weekend and was also on target during Tuesday’s 3-2 defeat also at home to Newcastle University.

Wainwright, who has now scored seven goals in as many games including a hat-trick on his club debut in a 4-3 defeat at home to Willington last month, remains hungry for more.

“Just trying to keep the good form going,” he told The Royal Gazette.

Durham remain bottom of the league standings having taken one point from their seven matches to date. But despite their struggles, Wainwright believes the club’s fortunes are beginning to improve.

“The team is starting to jell very well,” he said. “We just need to be much more disciplined in our defensive duties like corners and setpieces.”

Durham have scored 13 goals, thanks to Wainwright’s impressive goal-scoring exploits, but have leaked in 23 goals at the back.

The club received a reprieve to stay in the Northern League Division 2 despite having been at the bottom of the standings last season after the English FA and the National League System reached a consensus to end the previous season early because of Covid-19.

All results were expunged, meaning no promotion or relegation.

Wainwright was recommended to Durham by scouts after being spotted playing for Somerset Trojans.

He agreed to join the club in April having impressed the coaching staff and is excited about the challenge of playing non-League football.

“Every player wants to have the opportunity to play semi-professionally or professionally and I’m excited about this opportunity,” Wainwright said. “I definitely want to grasp this opportunity.”

Durham are back in league action tomorrow away to mid table Redcar Athletic at Green Lane.
