Whaley still starter for clash against TCU
Devwah Whaley will keep the starting running back’s job for the University of Arkansas’ game against Texas Christian on Saturday.
The Bermudian running back was listed as joint No 1 on head coach Bret Bielema’s depth chart with senior David Williams for this weekend’s game against the Horned Frogs. The game takes place at Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville with a 4.30pm kick-off Bermuda time and will be broadcast live on CBS.
Whaley ran for 60 yards on 12 carries and scored the Razorbacks’ first touchdown of the season, a five-yard run in the first quarter, in their season-opening 49-7 win over Florida A&M last Thursday. The sophomore also threw a key block on Austin Allen’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Deon Stewart that gave Arkansas a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
However veterans Whaley and Williams, who gained 23 yards and scored two touchdowns on seven attempts, were both outgained by true freshman Chase Hayden, who ran for 120 yards on 14 carries, including a five-yard TD of his own in the third quarter.
Playing early in week one has given the Razorbacks more time to prepare for TCU, who hammered Football Conference Subdivison side Jackson State 63-0 on Saturday. Arkansas defeated the Horned Frogs 41-38 in double overtime last September on the road in Fort Worth.
“Arkansas played on Thursday night so they got more rest, they got more preparation,” TCU head coach Gary Patterson said.
Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema told local reporters that Whaley “played well” last Thursday, but that Hayden “wasn’t even close to what he’s shown at times,” despite becoming the first Razorback true freshman to run for 100 yards in a season opener since Alex Collins gained 131 yards against Louisiana-Lafayette in 2013.
Offensive co-ordinator Dan Enos said he expects Whaley to “get more carries this week, along with whoever the hot hand is.” He added that getting Hayden most of the carries last Thursday was the plan “because he’s a freshman”.
