Boys and girls wearing huge smiles walked in to St David’s Primary yesterday on their first day back to school.

Approximately 80 smartly dressed students waved and kissed their parents goodbye, eager to start the year on an excellent note.

The historic school, that dates back to 1893, was one of the four that were identified as potential candidates for closure earlier this year as part of the Bermuda Government’s School Reorganisation (Score) plan — the others were Heron Bay Primary School, Gilbert Institute and Prospect Primary School.

Principal Gladstone Thompson told The Royal Gazette: “I feel very optimistic today. We have really good staff at St David’s Primary and we’ve had lots of preparation discussions already about this school year, so we know already, categorically, what is going to happen between now and the last day of school.

“It is no secret and the blueprint has been set and all we have to do now is follow the plan as we are extremely ready.

“We are absolutely elated for the St David’s community because of the fact that the school remains open.

“We think that this is an icon in the community; it is a pillar and the community does value it.

“We are glad that the school is open and the children have arrived from the neighbourhood and we think it serves our community well and will continue to do so.”
