Probation and curfew for girl in school stabbing case

The girl responsible for the school hall stabbing at CedarBridge Academy earlier this year has been sentenced to probation for 18 months.

Acting Family Court magistrate Justin Williams yesterday also slapped a 9 p.m.

weeknight curfew and a 10.30 p.m. weekend curfew on the 14-year-old after she admitted stabbing another 14-year-old.

The girl -- who cannot be named because she is a juvenile -- pleaded guilty in June to assaulting her classmate on January 6 this year.

She had little to say before Mr. Williams yesterday, except to answer his direct questions about the incident.

Prosecutor Peter Giles said the knife used in the stabbing was the victim's although the perpetrator was known to carry one.

In January, CedarBridge principal Ernest Payette called the incident "out of character'' for the school and said it came out of a personal dispute which "boiled over''.

An independent source claimed the "well behaved'' assailant had been "precipitated'' into retaliation -- which was "atypical'' of her. The pair would later take part in a peer mediation programme, "Fresh Start'', instituted by the Coalition for the Protection of Children.

But the assailant has now left CedarBridge and her mother -- who was in the courtroom -- pledged to monitor her daughter's behaviour.

"Otherwise there is a place which she knows about where she will be going,'' she added.

The mother said she knew her daughter had a penknife but vigorously denied her daughter owned the knife seized by Police.

The girl told The Royal Gazette in April: "I wanted to resolve the whole thing so I didn't have to worry about fighting with her every time I walked down the street. I didn't want to walk around with a grudge between us for the next 20 years.'' Mr. Williams told the girl if she was over 16 she could have faced a heavier charge of grievous bodily harm.

And he warned her against carrying knives in the future, saying: "This is a serious matter. The outcome could have been tragic. There is a proper way to deal with things like this.''
