Goalkeeper Adams gives Trott vote of confidence
Mark Trott is the best candidate to take charge of the Bermuda national soccer team for the upcoming Copa Carib.
That is the view of goalkeeper Dwayne (Streaker) Adams, a regular in the national team for the last decade.
Adams, who plays semi-pro in the US for Charlotte Eagles and last season helped them gain promotion to the country's A-League, said he thought Trott had the best credentials to fill the national team coaching vacancy, at least temporarily.
Bermuda Football Association have advertised the jobs of senior and junior national team coaches and it is understood that they will choose a short-term coach from the list of applicants to take charge of the team for the Copa Carib in Antigua in March.
Adams, who has been following those developments from his home in North Carolina on The Royal Gazette website, had firm opinions on what was required from the new man in charge.
"Overall, I think that anyone taking over on a short-term basis should be familiar with the last nucleus of players we used, in order to get commitment from them,'' said Adams.
"I guess the advantage Mark Trott has is that he coached the last two under-23 teams. Those players are now the basis of the national team and they know the style of play that Mark will be looking for.
"And I guess a good result in the Caribbean Cup could help him to get the job long term.'' Adams was a member of the team which Trott guided to the Pan Am Games in Argentina in 1995, when they performed well against mighty Brazil and Chile.
Adams also expressed admiration for other contenders for the coaching jobs, Andrew Bascome, who has said he will apply and Kenny Thompson, who has not stated publicly whether he is interested.
"I know Kenny has been working with the youth team and he's been doing a great job there,'' said Adams.
"Kenny's commitment to soccer is shown by what he's managed to establish at North Village. He might make a good technical director.
"The youth team he is coaching now will probably be the nucleus of the future national team. They seem to be a good bunch of players.
"And then there is Gary Darrell and Andrew Bascome. These guys are proven as good coaches.'' With the Copa Carib just six weeks away and with the national team having played no matches in the last nine months, Adams conceded that the Bermuda team would travel to Antigua without adequate preparation.
And he reiterated last week's comments from former national team Gary Darrell when he added that this had been a shortcoming of Bermuda teams in the past.
"One of our biggest problems has always been that we don't get enough games against quality opposition,'' said Adams.
"Like now, the team will be going away on tour with just five weeks' preparation and that just doesn't cut it against teams who have been training for three months.'' Dwayne Adams Mark Trott
