Veteran pro Jacklin guides local juniors

golf professional Tony Jacklin shared his vast experience during a clinic at Belmont at the end of the opening round of the 15th Glidden Bowl.

Jacklin, who has earned $56,292 on the US Senior PGA Tour already this year and is 43rd on the money list, arrived in Bermuda on Monday as guest of Bermuda Junior Golf Association and Pembroke Paint Company who sponsor the Glidden tournament.

John Swift, president of the company, made arrangements to bring Jacklin and his family to Bermuda for the popular youth tournament in which Jacklin's 15-year-old son A.J. is competing.

"I'll try to advise them to simplify some of the things they work on,'' said Jacklin prior to yesterday's clinic at Belmont.

"We live in a very technological age where there are all types of equipment available, lots of tuition available through magazines and television and I believe it is very easy to get the whole thing out of perspective and complicated.

"My objective will be to simplify things and make it clearer what the objectives of the game are.'' Jacklin is a former British Open and US Open winner and was non-playing captain of four European Ryder Cup teams between 1983 and 1989, leading them to their first victory over the Americans in 27 years in 1985 and their first on US soil two years later.

Andrew Trott set a blistering pace in the opening round of the Glidden Bowl yesterday, firing a one-over par 71 to lead the 15-and-over age group by six shots. Aaron James led the 13-14 age division on 78 and Jarryd Dillas took the early lead among the under-12s with a score of 80.
