Fairmont gives primary school a helping hand
Victor Scott Primary School has been given $10,000 by the Fairmont Hamilton Princess to purchase books and electronics.
The hotel opened a $5,000 Amazon account for the Pembroke school to buy the books. And a team from the hotel also repainted and re-carpeted the school’s library, using materials left over from a hotel renovation.
In addition, Arch Reinsurance Ltd provided bookshelves and a 40-inch flat screen television.
The school also received six e-readers, two touch screen laptops and a wireless all-in-one colour printer, courtesy of the Princess.
The freshly renovated library is ready in time for tomorrow’s International Book Giving Day.
Thanking the hotel, school principal Valerie Williams said: “Education is crucial to the overall development of an individual and society at large — and having a first-rate library is a major part of that. We believe that ‘readers are leaders’.”
According to John Richardson, assistant director of housekeeping and chairman of the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Sustainability Committee, the hotel enjoys a close relationship with the school through learning sessions given by its staff to “teach the students about hospitality and inspire them to pursue a career in the industry”.
The donation came via a corporate grant awarded by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. Members of the public wishing to donate to Victor Scott Primary School or its new library Amazon account can call 292-1787.
