Man admits using stolen cheques
A 40-year-old man has admitted to defrauding a dead man out of $7,300.
Lerone Ming, of no fixed abode, told Magistrates’ Court this morning he stole a chequebook out of the deceased’s unoccupied Coot Pond Road, St George’s residence, then made the cheques out to himself, forged the dead man’s signature and cashed the cheques in his name.
Ming is charged with forging four separate cheques, using each forged cheques, falsely obtaining money from the forgeries and a further count of stealing $3,200 from Butterfield Bank.
Once the bank caught on to the fraudulent transactions, totalling $7,300, Ming was arrested after visiting the bank to withdraw more funds.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo remanded Ming into custody and ordered a Social Inquiry report and drug assessment, adjourning the matter to April 17.
