Bringing back traditional parish pride is David Semos’ aim — literally, as he seeks young archers to represent their home turf at the first-ever Archery Parish Challenge.

Mr Semos, who turns 68 this year, has 62 years’ history in Paget to give him bragging rights about his home corner of the island.

But he feels that national pride and awareness of home roots has lapsed among some young people.

“I saw the Department of Youth and Sport trying to get smaller organisations involved, but when they asked for someone proud of their community to speak at their six-monthly meeting, they got nobody, which was a shock to me,” he recalled.

The archery and fencing instructor plans to take up the cause, starting early in May, with the challenges taking place at the Paget Rectory, off Ord Road.

Known as the godfather of archery in Bermuda, Mr Semos “wants to get sports organisations doing parish projects, building up pride as well as interest in their own sports”.

“You plant the seed and see where it goes,” Mr Semos said.
