Runners take to roads
On the heels of last weekend's bronze medal team performance at the CAC Cross-Country Championships, Bermuda's top male runners will be gunning for individual honours tomorrow in the annual BTFA Half-Marathon.
Organisers have reverted to the original 13.1 mile course from St. George's to Hamilton, following the entire length of North Shore rather than veering around Harrington Sound.
This comparatively flat route coupled with the fact that several runners are coming off marathons in Washington and New York could lead to fast times, although it remains to be seen whether anyone can match last year's winning time of one hour, eight minutes, clocked by Scottish visitor Peter Fleming, who won't be defending his title.
Kavin Smith has a previous best on this course of 1:08.51, run in 1998, and could be pushed by rival Jay Donawa who pipped him for local honours at last week's CAC event.
Among the women, Anna Eatherley should be the hot favourite, having won last year in 1:24.12. Her closest competition is likely to come from Lynn Patchett, who clocked 3:10.20 at the recent New York Marathon.
Tomorrow's race begins from the RAA Club in St. George's at 9.00 a.m., finishing at Bull's Head Car Park in Hamilton.
