A new harbour-side spot offering luxury cocktails, gourmet burgers and flatbread pizzas will be opening officially tomorrow.
The Fairmont Hamilton Princess’ 1609 Bar & Restaurant, located on the hotel’s new state-of-the-art marina, was yesterday unveiled to media.
Consisting of 2,500 square feet of open air space, 1609 is looking to offer a casual and social atmosphere — with a menu that boasts everything from charcuterie to sandwiches and salads, as well as seasonally inspired entrées.
In addition to creating 25 new jobs on the Island, the restaurant aims to give tourists and local clientele a one-of-a-kind dining experience.
George Terpilowski, Princess’ general manager, said: “Inspired by its natural surroundings, 1609 is situated in one of Bermuda’s most breathtaking locations, offering stunning views of Hamilton Harbour from every vantage.
“It is designed to offer a casual atmosphere, with a unique alfresco cocktail and dining experience, unlike anything else in Bermuda.”
The newest edition to the iconic hotel is part of a more than 90 million dollar renovation, announced after the Green family took over the property two years ago.
Serving lunch, dinner and cocktails, 1609 will be open seasonally, from early spring to late fall from 11am until 10pm.
Its name pays hommage to Bermuda’s history — recognising the year the Sea Venture wrecked on the reefs of Bermuda in the summer of 1609.
The survivors of the wreck found themselves on a naturally beautiful island surrounded by bright turquoise seas. While their decision to stay here marked a new start for them as settlers and the Island.
The restaurant’s menu boasts items such as the ‘1609 Burger’, topped with onion jam, bacon and cheddar; and ‘Grilled Rockfish’, served with local squash, tomato, olives and capers.
In addition to “an eclectic mix” of starters, salads, sandwiches, burgers and flatbread pizza, it also offers a wide selection of wines and champagnes.
Rum Swizzle and Dark & Stormies are some of the traditional drinks featured on the “carefully crafted cocktail menu”, which also includes a Passion Fruit Mojito, Grapefruit Cosmo and the Gombey Collins (gin, fresh lemon elixir, local Gombey jam and soda).
Mr Terpilowski said: “We’re confident that the combination of the location, the cocktails and the food will make 1609 Bermuda’s new summertime hot spot for locals, tourists and boaters.”
He said its menu and proximity to town should also make it a popular after work spot.
Appetisers start at $9, while entrées range from $24 to $38. Cocktails cost between $10 and $18.
