Almost every great calypso singer has a nickname, Terron Webbe calls himself Invincible.

The 11-year-old becomes one of the good guys in his beloved cartoons whenever he gets on stage.

He loves how the characters always triumph over evil before the end of the show.

His superhero powers didn’t feel so strong however, as he prepared for the St Kitts Primary School calypso contest last month.

“I knew I had some competition,” the young Bermudian said. “My biggest competitor was a good friend of mine.

“I calmed down and got through it. You have to try your best to do your best.”

He was thrilled to be crowned Calypso King on December 22.

“I felt great when I realised I won, but I also felt good for the other participants.

“They also did well. I was pretty confident I would place, but wasn’t sure I would win.”

Terron left Bermuda for Nevis as a baby, with his mother Angela Williams.

His Bermudian grandparents, Lloyd and Millie Williams, were already living there. His grandfather is a jazz musician in Nevis resorts.

“He helped me warm up my voice before the competition,” said Terron. “As a toddler, I’d drum on the table while he practised. That is where the music started. I was singing before I could speak.

“One day when I was eight I was singing in the shower. My mother heard me and asked me if I’d like to sing calypso. I said ‘Sure’.”

She signed him up for several competitions. He placed in the Nevis Culturama Jr Calypso competition and the St Thomas Parish Festival last year.

In 2015, he was also crowned Calypso King at his school competition.

“I think I did better this time around,” he said. “The crown is good, but most of the time it hurt my head because it is metal — but I was expecting that because I had the same one last year.”

The $2,500 he received as part of his prize has been put aside.

“I am saving up to go to college one day,” he said. “I’m not sure what I want to do as a career, but I think I would like to study either sports or music.”

He and his mother return to the island every summer.

“He would love to perform in Bermuda,” said Ms Williams. “We are very open to that.”
