Boy gives away Christmas toys to needy
In the true spirit of giving today, five-year-old Yu’udai Trott-Hayward will donate his own toys and clothing to the needy.
This is not the first Christmas that Yu’udai has made a sacrifice to help those less fortunate than himself — last year he did the same, thanks to a valuable life lesson from his mother Aisha Trott.
Ms Trott wanted her son to appreciate all that he had and encouraged him to give away some of the things he didn’t use often to those children who receive little or nothing.
They marched down to Albuoy’s Point for Royal Bermuda Yacht Club’s chef Michiko Campbell’s annual Christmas dinner giveaway for the homeless and set up a table to display his gifts.
By the end of the event, all his presents were taken by families in need. Now Yu’udai is keen to carry on the tradition of giving.
Ms Trott said: “He is going to be giving away toys and probably some other items like clothing and shoes to those who are in need. Last year, it was all of his stuff he gave away because he was not really appreciating all of his toys.
“We took them to Albuoy’s to give them to people who would really appreciate them. The lesson is that it is better to give than to receive and that some people enjoy your undesirable stuff that you don’t want any more — someone will love it. Now he is at the point where he will say ‘mommy can I give this away so that you can buy me this?’”
Ms Trott said her son, who attends West Pembroke Primary School, was so pleased to see other children playing with his toys last year that he was keen to do the same again this year. He will head back to Mr Campbell’s event which takes place at Albuoy’s Point from 6pm to 10pm today to set up another stall.
“We tried to get some friends involved — some people who saw the story last year and who have offered to give some of their things,” Ms Trott added.
“I have some donations from some children and we are trying to get other children to come. I am expecting some others to come and help.
“We will be down there on Friday and just going to set up with tables and children can come and take as they please.
“We are not well off, but that doesn’t stop us from being able to give to someone else, I am trying to teach him giving is important.”
