No catching Lopes and Cherokee’s Ironman
Cherokee’s Ironman posted the season’s fastest time during last weekend’s harness racing at the Bermuda Equestrian Centre.
Arnold Manders’s gelding shaved one fifth of a second off the previous mark after running a 1:03 flat competing in the Free for All with Tyler Lopes in the sulky.
Lopes and Cherokee’s Ironman, last season’s top pony, gave a sign of things to come after posting a 1:03/3 in heat 12, which was later matched by Simsfield Hardtimes and driver Ryan Burrows.
Going into the weekend, IC’s Overextended held the season’s fastest time. The Whited Family’s mare posted a 1:03/1 in the Free for All with Lopes at the helm to set a new record for a mare. Pocket De Gold and driver Tristan Truran posted the second fastest time of 1:04 flat also in the Free for All at Vesey Street on Saturday, with Brona’s Mike and driver Nick DeCosta achieving the third fastest of 1:04/2 in the same division.
Kiwon Waldron continued his sparkling form after racking up five heat victories with three different ponies.
He had two victories in the 1:10/1 & slower division with War Machine along with a pair of wins in the 1:06/1-1:07/1 division with Double Time. Waldron’s remaining victory also came in the 1:06/1-1:07/1 division at the helm of Skyway Majestic.
Lopes also continued his winning ways as the experienced driver earned four visits to the winner’s circle. He had two heat wins in the 1:08/2-1:10 division with Google Me to go along with the pair of victories in the Free for All with Cherokee’s Ironman.
Burrows was the remaining driver with multiple victories, posting two wins in the Free for All with Simsfield Hardtimes.
Park Ranger, with women’s driver Andrea Westerfield at the helm, was the only pony getting a leg out of its division having posted a 1:07/1 in the 1:07/2-1:08/1 division.
The Boxing Day Stakes qualifying races take place from 1pm.
