In his triumph Smith beat off a strong challenge by Tracy Wright who was winner of the two previous races held during the past month. Anna Eatherley was the winner the three-mile race for women.

Smith came home in 32:30, comfortably ahead of Wright who followed in 33:09 while Brett Forgesson was third (34:54) and Jeremy Ball fourth (35:33).

Eatherly won the women's division in 19:16 while Lynn Kynoch was second in 19:20 and Jane Christie third in 20:26.

Wright described the course as the "toughest'' he had experienced since taking up cross-country.

"It's a very hilly course with the beginning alone taking you over three big hills, one of which virtually has you using both hands and feet to get over,'' said Wright.

Smith and Wright ran together for much of the time during the two-lap route with Smith edging ahead as the pair reached the halfway stage of the final lap.

The rest of the pack were much further behind most of the time leaving Smith and Wright alone to challenge for honours. Smith wrapped it up with a late surge that Wright was unable to answer and won by 150 yards.

MOTOCROSS SCR There was controversy once again in the 80cc class during the Pepsi National Championships staged by the Bermuda Auto Cycle Union at Coney Island on Sunday when a rider was accused of having an over-sized engine.

Defending champion of the division and current points leader Kemo Simons, who is racing out of the Leslie Wilson Cycle Shop, was the rider who had the protest lodged against him and because of the incident all of the results remain tentative.

Simons got two good starts and triumphed by wide margins over Chris Maxwell, but the latter turned the tables in the last race to win with Simons placing second and a steady Michael Burgess third. Jamell Hassell was fourth and newcomer Shaki Easton fifth.

Devin Moss rode well to his third hat-trick of the year over Evan Lambert to take honours in the 125cc class. Kyle Constable did not start.

The 125 B class was won by Aaron Pace two races to one over Malcom Raynor.

Pace moves to second in points behind Justin Belboda. Cory Smith rode to two victories over Duprey Joell in the 250 B class.

GOLF GLF The Bermuda Golf Association Four Ball Championships get under way at Port Royal on Thursday when 26 pairs of men commence their 72-hole better ball stroke play event.

The women commence their 54-hole better ball stroke play event on Friday also at Port Royal. There are 23 pairs who have entered so far but there is space available for one more pairing.

The 1991 winners in both the men's and women's championships are defending their titles. They are male champions Dan Rourke and Dennis Connors and female winners American Janina Jacobs and Bermudian Madeline Joell.

On Saturday, November 14, the BGA monthly medal play competition will continue at Port Royal and players are reminded to enter on or before 6 p.m. on November 10 by calling secretary Tom Smith at 238-1367.

TABLE TENNIS PP There will be a meeting for all players available to play in the Detroit tournament November 25-30 tomorrow at The Centre commencing at 7.30 p.m.

Players interested in attending the tournament but unable to attend the meeting should confirm their standing with an executive member.

SWIMMING SW There were five double gold medal winners on Saturday as the Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association Winter National Age Group Championships continued at the BASA pool.

William Massey, Jessica Sousa, Laura Farge, Stephen Fahy and Alicia Mullen all turned in remarkable performances.

In addition each heads their respective age group in terms of point totals with one weekend of competition remaining, and slated for November 21.

Meanwhile, Sean Smatt also turned in an outstanding AA time of 18 minutes, 24.29 seconds in the 1,500 metres freestyle for boys 13 and 14.

CHESS CHS Eric Keen got the better of Nigel Chudleigh and Tony Simpson was held to a draw by Michael Craggs in the two top matches last week.
