Kemo finds way to winner's podium again

National Championships on Sunday at Coney Island with new champions crowned in all the classes except the 250cc.

Jamel Hassell is the new 80cc champion, thus marking his first title after many years in the runner-up position. Hassell may remain in the class in a bid to defend his title next season, with possible plans to ride in the 125 C division in non-national events.

Craig Panchaud and Howard Paynter improved in the latter events to challenge Hassell but had to settle for second and third respectively.

Duprey Joell repeated as champion in the 250 class with newcomers Jason Harrell finishing second and Karvel Smith third.

Former 80cc champion Kemo Simons won his third title and first on the bigger bike when he made a smooth transition from the 80 to 125 C class by taking further honours.

Such has been the progress of Simons that he will be promoted to the 125 B division next season alongwith C Class runner-up Stephen Lightbourne and third placed Kyle Constable.

There were three new classes added to the roster this season, the Pee Wee 50 and 80cc and the re-introduced 60cc class. Maurice Symonds in the Pee Wee 50 and Mawrenzo Trott (PW 80) will enter the history book as first time winners of the new classes.

Gary Cann and Brandon DeSilva finished second and third in the 50's and Aaron Cannonier and Steven Panchaud second and third in the 80's. Panchaud switched to the 60cc class in mid-season to finish second to the new champion Chris DeSilva.

Robbie Smith became the third king of the premier class in as many seasons when he followed Justin Belboda and Aaron Pace to the winner's podium. Pace is abroad in school and Belboda finished the season second. Chris Maxwell placed third.

This coming Sunday marks the final races of the season, the Grand Prix. The prize presentation is tentatively scheduled for May 13 at a venue to be confirmed later.
