Homeless man admits health clinic theft
A 58-year-old man has been sentenced to 90 days in prison for stealing $450 from the Hamilton Health Centre in Pembroke.
Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Richard Allen, of no fixed abode, admitted trespassing at the Victoria Street health clinic and stealing the money on September 23.
The court heard that a staff member attended the clinic in the early hours of Friday morning after the alarm was activated.
Everything seemed normal but later that day it was noticed that some things were out of place.
And when the complainant returned to work last Wednesday, she noticed that the cash was missing from her desk draw.
Allen was identified via CCTV footage and he admitted the offence during a police interview on Saturday.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo sentenced Allen, who has more than 20 previous convictions for similar offences, to 90 days’ imprisonment.
He also ordered Allen to pay an outstanding $300 fine today, or face 30 days in prison, which would run consecutively to the 90 days.
