Alumiglas is looking ahead to new opportunities as it celebrates its relocation to larger premises.

It has been praised by Michael Dunkley, the Premier, for providing apprenticeships and helping Bermudians establish a career in the glazing business.

During the past few weeks the company has been settling in at 15 Cox’s Hill, Pembroke, just behind Auto Solutions. Today it celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The new location gives the company 3,700ft of space, compared with a mere 800ft at its previous base in Bakery Lane.

Alumiglas provides residential and commercial glazing services. Moving premises has given it the opportunity to provide retail space and custom manufacturing, and increased employee training areas. There is also more storage space.

Mr Dunkley cut the ribbon and congratulated the company for showing vision and confidence.

“It takes a lot of confidence to move a business forward in tough times, and we are progressing along a much better road now,” he said.

“We are progressing together and it would never be possible without your commitment, your business plan, and the staff you have working for you.”

George Tatem, chief executive officer, has 38 years of experience in glazing and glass installation. He created the company in 2005. It now has a staff of 14, including a local team of glaziers and apprentices.

Introducing the team, Mr Tatem said they were “tremendously hard working”.

He added: “We’ve done so much work in the last couple of months, we did the Princess, Bermuda Commercial Bank building, all running on schedule and together.

“Having a new facility affords us the opportunity to provide and develop our young men into certified glaziers, and future employment opportunities for those currently in the industry.”

The Premier also praised the Alumiglas team. He said: “If you are going to have a successful business, it comes with the staff. And I believe, as George does, in Bermudians. If we train them, if they get the passion for the industry they are working in, they will never ever let you down.”

Last year, Steve Barber became managing director, bringing to the company his 39 years of experience. He has worked extensively in Bermuda and Canada.

Mr Tatem said: “Steve and I have over 75 years of combined experience in this business on island, and the goals are simple; to be the best provider and partner in the industry.”

Mr Barber added: “We are a company ready to continue our commitment to Bermuda and certainly the development of opportunities for our young men to become first class glaziers.

“For us, the Alumiglas growth proves that we can expand our business, grow in our capabilities, and be a beacon of confidence in Bermuda.”

Among the guests at the ribbon-cutting was Sir John Swan, the former Premier.
