Two motorists who crashed their vehicles in the early hours of last Saturday morning have been fined and banned from driving.

Kyle Trott, 20, lost control of a black Ford Focus while travelling along Cavendish Road near Hibiscus Lane.

When police officers approached the car at 4.10am, they saw there was damage to its front, and one of its tyres had come off.

The defendant from Devonshire was found slumped over the steering wheel, with the keys still in the ignition.

When officers roused him, Trott fumbled to produce his driver’s licence, and when he stood up he was found to be shoeless, with glazed eyes and unsteady feet.

He refused to take a breathalyser test, and was arrested.

Magistrates’ Court heard today that the defendant had no previous convictions, and he apologised for his actions.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Trott $800 and disqualified him from driving all vehicles for 12 months.

In a separate incident on Saturday morning, police were called to a single-vehicle cycle crash on Pitts Bay Road at 1.53am.

At the scene, Daniel Evans from Pembroke made himself known to officers. The defendant had minor injuries from the incident, but refused to go to hospital.

After noticing that Evans’ eyes were glazed, he smelt of liquor and that he was unsteady on his feet, officers took him to Hamilton Police Station.

The 30-year-old agreed to a breath test, which showed a reading of 212mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood — more than 2.5 times the legal limit of 80mg.

Evans, who had no previous convictions, apologised to the court. Mr Tokunbo fined him $1,200 and disqualified him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.

Evans has until October 10 to pay his fine, or he faces 100 days in prison in default.
