The countdown to MS Amlin World Triathlon Bermuda is on in earnest, with the men’s and women’s races of the elite fields only hours away.

Again The Royal Gazette, as a part sponsor, will be bringing the action to the living rooms of those who cannot make it to the course in Hamilton and to the devices of those who can but are watching from the wrong place at the wrong time as the action begins to heat up.

The men’s race begins at 1.06pm with Casper Stornes, of Norway, defending his title won after an audacious breakaway on the bike at Corkscrew Hill. His main rivals should be three-times defending world champion Mario Mola, five-times former world champion Javier Gomez Noya and English star Jonathan Brownlee.

Stornes and compatriots Kristian Blummenfelt and Gustav Iden completed an incredible sweep of the podium last year. A repeat of that feat would be the stuff of dreams.

The women start at 4.06pm, a fish-hook-sized hole left in the field by the absence of Bermuda star Flora Duffy, the 2018 champion, two-times world champion and winner of Commonwealth Games gold last year.

Duffy has given in to a niggling foot injury with a view to being 100 per cent next year so that she can make a run at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

That said, the women’s race should still be fascinating, with American Katie Zaferes, Vicky Holland, of Britain, and Ashleigh Gentle, of Australia, in the field.
