Fletcher warms up for Rio Games
Julian Fletcher competed in his final warm-up race ahead of the Olympic Games in Rio at the Los Angeles Invitational at the weekend.
Fletcher finished eighth in the 100 metres breaststroke A final in a time of 1min 3.76sec at Uytengsu Aquatics Centre at the University of Southern California.
“It felt strong and was consistent with my previous in-season performances,” Fletcher said.
“Now I start to taper, spend more time recovering and eating healthy, so that I can be prepared for my race in Rio.”
Fletcher, 25, heads to Trinidad on July 27 for a weeklong training camp with the University of Southern California’s Elite Team to put the finishing touches to his preparations for Rio.
“David Salo [the Elite Team’s head coach] will be going and we’re taking about five guys down to Trinidad to try and get accustomed to the time change and climate,” Fletcher added.
“They have just built a new 50 metres outdoor pool that hasn’t even been opened yet. We will be first swimmers to use that pool.”
Fletcher will compete in the 100 breaststroke in Rio, where he will look to improve on his personal best of 1:02.47.
Rebecca Heyliger will join Fletcher as Bermuda’s two swimmers in Rio. The 23-year-old will compete in the 50 freestyle.
