Eastern Stars' Dexter Smith has been tabbed as the favourite in the national championships which will be held tomorrow at Elliott Primary School, starting
Smith, sports the best individual league record of 32-1 followed by Mike Burgess (26-1) who surprisingly was chosen as the second seed ahead of two-time winner Cory Berkeley and defending champion Nick Frost.
Burgess, however, will have to justify his high seeding right away as he faces brother Cal Burgess in his opening match.
The Burgesses are in the same half of the draw as Hamilton Parish team-mate Berkeley while Smith and Frost are in the other half.
Reginald Benjamin, the only player to beat top seed Smith so far this season, has not entered the tournament.
Organisers decided not to see doubles team and that has made the draw bottom heavy with Derron Trott and Cory Berkeley expected to advance from the top half.
The bottom half, however, features three potential tournament winners -- Roderick Masters and Kacy King; Dexter and Andrew Smith; and Cal and Mike Burgess.
The outside chances figure to be Nick Frost, the 1992 winner with Andrew Smith, in partnership with Monique Ternier, the lone female in the league.
