Evans breaks Bulldogs' indoor record

Aaron Evans

Bermuda’s top middle distance runner Aaron Evans jumped off his sick bed to break his third record in less than a year.Evans set a new personal best in the indoor 800 metres, finishing in one minute 48.07 seconds to finish ninth at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Washington, at the weekend. His time, which was two seconds quicker than his previous best, also broke the University of Georgia’s indoor record held by fellow Bermudian Steve Burgess who ran 1:48.34 in 1984.Evans, who had spent the last fortnight in bed with flu, now holds both the indoor and outdoor records at UGA.Back in May, he broke the university’s 800m outdoor record, clocking in at 1:47.00, shattering the previous record of 1:47:64 which was a 25-year-old national record also set by Evans’ mentor Burgess. The Bulldogs’ distance coach Jeff Pigg said: “Aaron wasn’t able to train much over the last two weeks since he was sick so I thought he competed very well in those circumstances.“We know there’s more there and now I think he has the confidence and will be able to get back to work to prepare for the (Southeastern Conference) Championships.“He made the best out of this opportunity thanks to his talent and desire today.”The former Warwick Academy student won a bronze medal at the NCAA Championships last year for the Bulldogs.Evans’ impressive weekend display follows on from Latroya Darrell’s record breaking leap of 12.95m in the triple jump at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet last weekend. Darrell, who also competes for the University of Georgia, broke Arantxa King’s national record of 12.93m.Also at the weekend, Kyra Scraders qualified for the Carifta Games ‘A’ Standard in the girl’s under-17 800m with a run of 2:18.89. She had already qualified for the under-17 girl’s 1500m.Shaquille Dill, who won a silver at last year’s Carifta Games, also met the ‘A’ standard in the under-20 boy’s 800m with a time of 1.52.31.The Carifta Games will be held in Jamaica in April.
