Driver admits drunken Causeway crash

A drunk driver who crashed his car on the Causeway while three-and-a-half times over the legal limit has been fined and banned from the road.

At 11.30pm on March 22, Bermuda Police Service officers found 42-year-old Steve Perinchief next to his vehicle on the St George’s bridge.

The black Kia Picanto’s front had been badly damaged after hitting a wall, and officers noted that Perinchief was unsteady on his feet and his breath smelt of liquor.

The defendant, from Lighthouse Hill, St David’s, admitted he had been drinking vodka, and agreed to provide a breath sample after being arrested.

At Hamilton Police Station, it was determined that he had 286 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — the legal limit is 80mg.

In Magistrates’ Court this morning, Perinchief pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal blood-alcohol limit.

Apologising to parties including his family and the Bermuda public, the defendant said that he was glad nobody was harmed due to his behaviour.

He added: “I’m really remorseful for my reckless actions, and I take full responsibility.”

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Perinchief $1,200 and disqualified him from driving for 18 months.
