Dockyard Glassworks has gone home. The company has moved back into its original home after $900,000 worth of renovation work, including a new roof and windows. The furnace was also moved from the centre of the building.

An official opening celebration will be held on Monday.

Dockyard Glassworks owners Wendy Sherwood-Avery and her son Alan Avery said they were “very happy with the results” of the work carried out by the West End Development Corporation.

She added: “It was a long four months being closed. But it was worth it — the building looks so much better and lighter and with the furnace move it is a bit cooler.”

The work is part of a series of improvements to the historic former Royal Navy base.

Over two years, Wedco will invest more than $10 million in the area, including $500,000 of work on the Sail Loft building and $3.5 million on Prince Alfred Terrace.

Wedco added that it was expected all the buildings in the North Basin area, except the Victualling Yard and associated buildings, will be wind and waterproof.

Andrew Dias, general manager of Wedco, said he was pleased the glass-blowing factory was operational again.

“It is a huge attraction and it has been missed. We are really happy with the renovations that have been carried out,” he said.

“The renovation of the glassworks building is yet another step in making the Royal Naval Dockyard an exciting and vibrant destination.”
