The Opposition’s acting leader Walter Roban and PLP senator Renee Ming have urged Government to reopen the St George’s Police Station or at least increase police presence in the End East in light of the recent spate of robberies.

The latest attack was on the Vera P. Card shop on Water Street from where various jewellery items were stolen.

Shadow Minister of Home Affairs Roban and Ms Ming said “something needs to be done and soon”.

In a joint statement, Mr Roban and Ms Ming said: “Incidents like the armed robbery (on Wednesday) at Vera P. Card in St George’s have become all too common place in present day Bermuda. We have seen this play out far too many times with seemingly no real plan in place to arrest the increase in lawlessness throughout Bermuda.

“In St George’s, there remains no Police Station and limited police presence, something that this OBA government promised in the lead up to the 2012 election. It has been almost 4 years since the election and even with constant outcries from the St George’s community, there doesn’t seem to be one forthcoming.”

Mr Roban and Ms Ming made note of last week’s Town Hall meeting, hosted by the Corporation of St George’s, when the Minister of National Security confirmed that a Police Station was not in his government’s plans.

“What needs to be explained is the plan for St. George’s and the island on a whole in regards to the current state of affairs and lawlessness that has saturated our island,” added the statement.

“Promises have been made and broken, but at this juncture, there need not be any more talking points. What is needed is a clear and concise plan of action so that our residents and visitors are not only safe, but actually feel safe.”
