Teen jailed for probation breaches
A Devonshire teenager who repeatedly breached the conditions of his probation was this morning jailed for four months.
Raheem Wray, 19, was initially placed on 12-months probation for traffic offences, but his period of probation was extended by two years after he was convicted of stealing an iPhone last August.
In that incident, he reportedly snatched the phone from a woman’s hands while another teenager grabbed her purse.
Magistrates’ Court heard that he had repeatedly tested positive for cannabis, missed numerous meetings and had failed to charge his electronic monitoring device despite repeated warnings.
A representative of Court Services said: “He is making a mockery of the order that has been set before him and the department has no choice but to recommend that the order is revoked.”
Wray, however, maintained that he had been attending meetings and doing what he can to stay in line with the conditions of his probation, but doing so became difficult after he was kicked out of his home.
“I was doing good until last month,” he said. “I was kicked out again. Until then, I was reporting and doing what I was supposed to do.
“No one would let me charge the bracelet at their house.”
While he said he was doing his best, magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo responded: “Your best is not good enough, given the last couple of chances you have been given.”
