A number of teenagers were charged this morning with a series of fights, said to be linked to a rivalry between centrally located students and those from the East End.

The first of the three fights was said to have taken place outside of CedarBridge Academy on January 20, and was reportedly caught on CCTV cameras.

One teenager, 16-year-old Eynche Zuill, pleaded guilty to being involved in a public affray in connection to the incident, while Jamali Laws, 16, and Jaire Butterfield, 17, denied the offence.

Another young person, 16-year-old Jahkai Bailey, denied a charge of using threatening gestures — making gun gestures with his fingers — in connection to the incident.

The next altercation took place on North Street, near Transport Control Department, on February 1. Prosecutors alleged that a group of students wielding helmets and canes attacked two young people taking part in Project Ride.

Two defendants charged in the CedarBridge fight — Zuill and Mr Laws — pleaded not guilty to charges of affray in connection to the North Street fight.

However, Giano Liburd, 16, Jason Symonds, 16, and Jerome Bailey, 18, all pleaded guilty to a charge of affray.

Meanwhile, the third altercation reportedly took place on March 7 in the Palmetto Road area.

Three young people were charged in connection to that incident — Mr Laws, Symonds and 16-year-old Micah Davis — and all three pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo released all of the eight students charged on $3,000 bail with like sureties, ordering social inquiry reports on those who had offered guilty pleas.

All three incidents are expected to go to trial this summer.
