To mark the 10th anniversary of the Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies (BFIS) its Board of Trustees have decided to fund a new scholarship in the name of their founder, Brian R. Hall.

The scholarship is worth $30,000 a year for up to four years. Since the launch of BFIS in 1996, Mr. Hall, Chairman, has funded the equivalent of a BFIS scholarship annually.

Insurance industry leaders formed the BFIS to develop a well educated workforce of Bermudians to take up positions in the ever expanding Bermuda insurance industry.

This goal is being achieved through an integrated programme of scholarships, mentoring, internships and career guidance.

In the past ten years over $2.25 million has been awarded to seventy five students. Forty five of those students have now graduated and are embarking on their careers.

Overall, just over $8 million has been raised in pledged donations, of which over $6 million is invested in an Endowment Fund.

Mr. Hall said: ?I am delighted that we have been able to achieve so much over time and that the effectiveness of BFIS is continually being felt both in the industry which supports it, as well as in the schools where we promote the opportunities for Bermudians to enter the Island?s primary industry.?

?The results to date have definitely proven the need and value for BFIS into the future. We would not have been achieved without the support of the representatives of our member companies, the mentors, and the sustained commitment of our Executive Director, Cathy Lapsley.?

Silk Thai Restaurant will introduce next week Kopi Luwak, a rare gourmet coffee made in Indonesia with less than 300 kilograms available each year.

Silk manager Claudio Vigilante said this product will be made available to the restaurant through a supplier in Indonesia.

?Bermuda is a sophisticated market and it is important for the restaurant business to stay ahead of trends. There is a great demand for high quality coffee products and there is a good local knowledge of coffee so Bermudians will appreciate how exclusive this product is,? Mr. Vigilante said.

Tiffany Wardman has joined the development team of the Bermuda Biological Station For Research (BBSR) as Manager of Publications and Media Relations.

Raised in Bermuda, Ms. Wardman has been working in publishing for the past ten years including a number of years as a managing partner of a weekly newspaper, The Crested Butte News in Colorado.

Until recently, she served as Art Director for Crown Communications, and .

Effective October 1, will be joining the BAS Group as Group vice president and CEO reporting directly to Group president Mr. Eugene Bean.

Mr. Joaquin holds a bachelor?s degree in political science from the University of Western Ontario.

He did his graduate studies in public accounting at McGill University in Montreal, culminating in a professional designation as a Certified Management Accountant (CMA).

Mr. Joaquin joined the civil service as an accountant in the Ministry of Works and Engineering in 1996 and rose through the ranks.

Transferring ministries, he became management accountant in the Accountant General?s Department in 1998, and was promoted to Assistant Accountant General two years later.

In July 2002, Mr. Joaquin assumed government?s top accounting position when he became the Accountant General.

After serving in that position for two years Mr. Joaquin was promoted to the post of permanent secretary for the Ministry of Health and Family Services.

Mr. Joaquin left the civil service in October 2004 to take over the helm of Stevedoring Services Limited as president & CEO where he was successful in enhancing the operations of the company.
