Going too hot for Barnes to handle

Johnny Barnes finished tenth at the weekend

Johnny Barnes, the Bermuda-owned thoroughbred, found the competition a little too hot at the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at Newbury Racecourse in Berkshire on Saturday.

The 22/1 outsider, ridden by Frankie Dettori, a three-times champion jockey, finished tenth in the group one race, which was won by 8/1 shot Godolphin-owned Berado.

Johnny Barnes’s chances of a strong finish had essentially evaporated by race time along with the moisture in the ground, with the four-year-old preferring soft or heavy conditions.

About two furlongs from the finish, Dettori moved Johnny Barnes towards the inside rail and asked him for response. The four-year-old, however, was unable to hold his own with the leaders, with Dettori opting to go into cruise control and save Johnny Barnes for another day.

Trained by John Gosden, Johnny Barnes finished fourth in his first race of the season at last month’s toteScoop EBF Stallions King Richard III Stakes at Leicester Racecourse.

Also owned by BTR are Bermuda-themed horses Castle Harbour, Horseshoe Bay, Sir George Somers, Great Sound and Paradise Lakes.
