Calling creators – come share your skills
A festival calling for collaboration from all of the island’s creators, whether they be artists and musicians or architects and actuaries, is to take place over multiple venues this June.
Bermudian violinist Taylor Rankin is preparing to host the second annual LeroyFest — named after his trusted instrument — which is planned over a three-week period.
The musician and songwriter is calling for locals to get involved and share their skills and passions at various venues, including the Aquarium, the Botanical Gardens and the Grotto Bay caves.
It is hoped that at least 25 artists and other “creators” will come together to work on a variety of projects that will follow a different theme depending on the venue.
Mr Rankin, who has spent the past year travelling through Egypt, Palestine, Israel and Zurich collaborating with other artists, told The Royal Gazette: “Doing this festival last year was so inspiring — Bermuda is full of the Joy Barnums, the DIAs, the Keith Caiseys who manage to keep their spirit alive.
“As musicians and writers we have a role. LeroyFest is our platform to tell our story but our Lego blocks are collaboration and solving creative problems. We want to do multiple venues — we have the core of me, Leroy, and Dwight Hart on drums — as well as other local contributors. We all have a knot inside of us and we need to unravel it and work together.
“Everyone is a creator, so it is about cutting down those barriers of what creativity or an artist is — a business owner or employer is a creator. They create value in the community so I am calling for all of these creators to come together once a year to create incredible things.
“We have architects, engineers, all sorts of people getting involved this year.”
The festival takes place from June 4 to June 25 at a number of locations including the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo, Grotto Bay Spa Cave and Beach, the Bermuda National Gallery, the Botanical Gardens as well as surprise venues.
Each event aims to cater to “the five senses and might even have a menu tailored to the other artistic creations on offer”, added Mr Rankin.
