Coventry bank on Goater goals to avoid drop
Shaun Goater will slip into the blue kit of Coventry today ready to begin the fight to save their season ? and prove he has something left to offer in the twilight of his career.
Goater, the victim of a contractual dispute and a manager not interested in his style of goalscoring, has started just two league games with Reading this season and is looking forward to being involved in ?meaningful matches? again.
And the final seven games of the season could not be more meaningful for the Sky Blues, the former club of national coach Kyle Lightbourne, as they fight for the right to remain in the Championship.
Micky Adams? men currently occupy the top relegation place and will begin their Goater-enhanced battle royale for survival at Highfield Road today against a tough-tackling Brighton side only three places ? and three points ? above them in the standings.
?I look at the quality here and I honestly wonder what Coventry are doing in this position?? said the former Manchester City talisman, who joined up with team-mates last Thursday for a testimonial game.
?I can only think that with the quality we have here, we maybe overplay it at times, perhaps we need a balance of playing and being a bit more direct.
?The main quality I will bring is a threat, and with that we should score more goals.
?When you?ve got players who are a threat, invariably they will score themselves, or somebody else scores.?
And Goater will be desperate for it to be him who gets on the scoresheet, having hit the back of the net just once this season for the first team ? a league cup goal against Oxford.
The Bermudian striker is keen to prove Royals boss Steve Coppell was wrong to freeze him out all season and is going into today?s clash with a renewed and genuine hunger to do well.
And the Goat, still a legend at City, is keen for the Coventry fans to back the side in today?s clash against Adams? former club.
?We need to have belief and confidence in ourselves, but if the fans can be like a 12th man then we can certainly do a lot better,? Goater told the club?s official website.
?Hopefully we?ll be doing well and the fans will have something to cheer about.
?I expect a battle and I think that it will about the team who settles down after the battle. That may be after 80 minutes, but I anticipate an aggressive, physical game.
?With the way Brighton play, they?ll be relaxed because they seem to play better away. Perhaps that may make them more confident on the ball, but as long as we are more effective, that?ll do for us.?
Victory today would put Coventry ahead of the Seagulls and in the safety zone.
Damon Ming will be hoping to do his best to save Maidenhead United from relegation from the Conference South when his side take on Welling United at home today.
