Logie takes charge of national team

Former West Indies Test player and coach Gus Logie officially started his new job as Bermuda?s coach yesterday ? just a day after launching a new book on how to be a better cricketer.

Forty four year-old Logie met his new charges at the Sir Frank Worrell Development Centre in central Trinidad where Bermuda?s squad began their 10-day training camp.

Throughout their stay, Bermuda will play a series of one-day warm-up matches against local selects.

Trinidad-born Logie ended his tenure as West Indies coach in October, 2004, six months before his three-year contract was due to expire and a month after leading the team to Champions Trophy victory in England.

Under Logie, the West Indies won only four out of 22 Tests, though their one-day record was better, with 20 wins out of 39.

His new 92-page book, ?Building Champions,? stresses the importance of a winning attitude. It was co-authored with friend and writer Emmanuel Guadeloupe.

?I felt that the timing was right for the book,? Logie said on Monday at a signing in a luxury hotel in Trinidad?s capital of Port-of-Spain.

?Personally as a coach, this was one of the areas we fell down in a lot, mentally,? he added.

?How do we retain information? How do we then recall it and execute it out there in the middle, especially in tight situations??

Big game for the Goat

Shaun Goater?s Coventry City face another vital clash tonight in their fight for League Championship survival, taking on relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest.

Forest are sitting in the middle demotion spot, four points from safety and five behind the Sky Blues.

Goater is hoping to be in the starting line-up again following the victory over Brighton on Saturday although fellow striker Stern John, missing from the 2-1 victory due to jetlag from international duty, is back in the frame.

The Bermudian striker played 80 minutes of his debut for Micky Adams? side, whom he joined on loan from Reading for the remainder of the season, but didn?t create any clearcut chances to score.

John Barry Nusum?s Philadelphia KiXX clinched a play-off spot last weekend, despite losing one of their two matches. The KiXX remain in second place with three weeks left in the season but are now guaranteed a top-four spot which is enough to ensure post-season play.

Rookie Nusum, who tops the club?s scoring charts, is currently out with an ankle injury but is expected to return before the end of the regular season.

Bermuda Pacers Track Club and organisers of the KPMG junior running series will join forces to present a track and field meet at the National Sports Centre on Saturday, April 9.

Most of the Island?s club are expected to be represented in the Under-Seven and Under-Nine competition which will see players take part in 30-minute games in a round-robin format.
