St George’s win classic on penalties
St George’s beat challengers Somerset in an exciting penalty shoot-out to retain their R.O Smith Over-40s All-Stars Classic title at Wellington Oval last weekend.
The home side prevailed 4-3 on penalties after both teams remained deadlocked at 1-1 at the end of regulation time.
Delbert Minors put St George’s ahead from the penalty spot just before the interval.
The visiting side, who struck the framework on three occasions, eventually hit back early in the second half through Dwight Basden’s equaliser.
However, St George’s would not be denied a fourth successive title and ninth overall.
“It was a very good game; highly competitive and the guys enjoyed themselves,” Larry Hunt, the event organiser, said. “This was the third or fourth straight game that St George’s has won on penalties.”
In keeping with tradition, after the match former members from the opposing clubs were honoured.
Gladstone “O’Hell” Robinson, the goalkeeper, and Lionel Turner, the youth coach and educator, were among this year’s honorees from Somerset, while Gregory “Brutus” Foggo, the former Cup Match captain, and Wallace Robinson and Calvin Leon Smith were honoured by St George’s.
Robinson played in goal for challengers Somerset before he was replaced by Winslow “Scaley” Williams, the brother of Larry Mussenden, the Bermuda Football Association president — at the break.
Receiving a special award was former journalist and broadcaster Winston J.R Jones.
This year’s guest speaker was Dennis Wainwright, a former goalkeeper and St George’s cricketer.
“The presentations went well and was well received,” Hunt added. “The weather cooperated, we had a great turnout and overall it was a good day and everyone enjoyed themselves.”
Somerset host the classic next year.
